Bicycling has tested thousands of bikes. And though bikes evolve and (usually) improve with time, in many ways they don’t change that much. Whether it’s a Schwinn from the 1970s or the most modern Specialized Tarmac, a bike is a machine with two wheels and pedals. Turn those pedals and off you go—to a place you know or an adventure you don’t.

There are scores of great used bikes for sale. They might not have that new-bike smell or fresh-off-the-line shine, but they can be a lot cheaper, and they have many delightful miles left in them. We scour online bike listings daily to find used bikes. Your next bike may be on this list.

Where You Can Buy

You can find a used bike almost anywhere—garage sales, flea markets, swap meets, even at the curb hung with a sign that reads Free. Behemoths like eBay and Craigslist offer the largest selection of used bicycles, and you can find some diamonds in the (very) rough if you’re willing to invest a lot of time combing through the hordes of clapped-out department store bikes found there.

Specialty used-bike marketplaces offer a more focused and curated selection of pre-owned bikes. The best-known player is The Pro’s Closet, but other robust marketplaces are found at Bike Exchange and Bicycle Bluebook, and in the classified sections of pinkbike.com, roadbikereview.com, and MTBR.com. If you’re looking for something classic, a vintage-bike specialist like RetroBike, Vic’s Classic Bikes, and Steel Vintage Bike can scratch your itch for lugs. Fan sites like YetiFan.com and VintageCannondale.com typically have for-sale boards as well.

Most used bikes are sold by private sellers. Buying from private sellers is often the best path for the best deal, and they’re more likely to negotiate than a used bike shop. But buying from a private seller can carry more risks. The bike may have undisclosed—and invisible—damage, it could be stolen, and it might even be a counterfeit. And if the seller packs the bike for shipment and doesn’t know what they’re doing, a very broken bike could arrive at your doorstep. The marketplace or the company you used for payment may offer some protection if you run into trouble with a private seller, but the private market is rowdier and has fewer safeguards than if you buy from an established business.

In contrast to private sellers, outfits like The Pro’s Closet offer written assurances (like return policies) and guarantees (like the bike you get will be as it was described in the listing). Used-bike stores also inspect, tune up, and professionally pack the bikes for shipment. But you’ll pay more for a used bike with these guarantees and protections than you would from a private seller.

How We Chose

We regularly dig into used-bike listings across the internet in search of the best examples to share with you. We look for great bikes as well as great values, plus interesting bikes, quirky bikes, and delightful weirdness too. If it’s a model we’ve tested, we’ll let you know. And if it’s one of our award winners—like Editors’ Choice or Gear of the Year—we’ll tell you that too. None of the specific bikes listed here have been evaluated or tested by us. We’re basing our recommendations off our experience with the same or similar models and with the brands themselves.

How Often Will We Update This List?

Because used bikes come and go so rapidly, we will attempt to update this list of great used bikes regularly. In doing so, we’ve learned that these bikes go fast. If you see one you like, don’t hesitate; it could be gone the next day. If you don’t see your dream bike here, bookmark this page and check back often.
